River Conditions

NOTICE

This information is reproduced once per day from the various web sites provided by the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies. It may not match accurately with VHF reporting of river stages or more recent reporting.

This is the river conditions report as of July 30, 2010.

Allegheny River: Normal operating conditions.

Monongahela River: Normal operating conditions.

Upper Ohio River: Normal operating conditions.

Kanawha River: Normal operating conditions.

The main chamber at R.C. Byrd Lock (MM279) is now closed to all navigation through August 8, 2010 to allow for inspections and gate repairs. All traffic will use the 110’ x 600’ auxiliary chamber. Delays are about 6 hours.

Big Sandy River: Normal operating conditions.

The main chamber at Greenup Lock (MM 341) will be closed to all navigation beginning October 4, 2010, through November 5, 2010 to allow for inspections and repairs. All traffic will use the 110’ x 600’ auxiliary chamber. Major delays are expected.

The main chamber at Meldahl Lock (MM 436) will be closed to all navigation beginning September 6, 2010, through September 10, 2010 to allow for gate repairs. All traffic will use the 110’ x 600’ auxiliary chamber.

Cincinnati: 26.5 feet, steady.

Dredging operations continue near the mouth of the Wabash River at MM848 Full tows are moving in both directions.

Cumberland River: Normal operating conditions.

Tennessee River: Normal operating conditions. River will be closed beginning August 2 through August 6, 2010 between 7am and 6pm each day. TVA will be replacing power lines at the crossing at Burns Island.

The single chamber at Chickamauga Lock (MM471) is closed for inspection and major maintenance through August 16, 2010. There is no auxiliary lock at Chickamauga.

Lower Ohio River:

Paducah: 17.7 feet, slow fall.

Lock 52 - The dam is currently down. Lock 53 - The dam is currently down.

Cairo: 32.4 feet, slow fall.

Illinois River:

Peoria Lock (RM 157.7), will be closed from, June 1st till August 29th, from 700AM to
500PM Monday through Saturday. After 500PM and until 700AM the lock will be re-opened for traffic; a 70 foot width restriction will be in place during this period. Towboat operators will be instructed on the availability of either the land or island wall for approach purposes. Towboat operators are requested not to tie up on the guide walls during this closure period.

The dams are currently down at both Peoria and LaGrange.

Upper Mississippi River:

High water conditions exist on the Mid-Miss and lower end of the upper. Transit times are slow due to high water and we are currently operating 12 barge maximum tow size southbound.

Lock 17 has reopened to navigation.

Lock 20 is closed to navigation on 7/29 at 07:10. Reopening is not anticipated before Tuesday, August 3.

The main chamber at Mel Price Lock (MM201) remains closed for maintenance until approximately August 7, 2010. All traffic will use the 110’ x 600’ auxiliary chamber.

St. Louis: 30.2 feet, holding at 30 feet until 8/2, then beginning a slow fall.

Lower Mississippi River:

The LMR will be closed at MM803 from 0700 to 1900 daily until approximately August 20, 2010 due to weir construction in the area.

Memphis: 17.9 feet, slow fall.

Arkansas River: Flows finally falling some and conditions are more favorable. Locks 4 and 5 will be closed for maintenance from 8/30 to 9/12

Vicksburg: 29.7 feet, steady.

Per Navigation Industries' request, New Orleans District will schedule the Closure of Old River Lock to commence on October 15, 2010 for 30 days to Install Miter Gates on the Mississippi River end. Note: If for some unforeseen reason the river stages rise above the dewatering bulkheads before the new gates are properly adjusted, Old River Lock could remain closed until the next low water season. The New Orleans District will do everything possible to try to prevent this from happening.

Baton Rouge: 23.5 feet, steady.

New Orleans: 7.6 feet, steady.

Commencing 7/28/2010 and continuing for approx 60 days Port Allen Lock will be closed to navigation from 7am to 7pm daily. During this time, a work unit will be at the Lock performing gate and valve repairs.

Currently there are no closures on the LMR or the GIWW for the oil spill. But there are some restrictions in the Perdido/Pensacola area. No changes. The Port of Pensacola remains open; however, Pensacola Pass will be closed to vessel traffic during flood tide. The deployed boom at Pensacola Pass will be tended for SAR response, ICW traffic, and any vessels that get caught out of the Pass and are inbound. The BP contracted vessel(s) tending the boom operations at Pensacola Pass will be monitoring marine channel 16 and working marine channel 81. Pensacola Pass will be opened during ebb tide. The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is presently open for vessel traffic; however, vessels may encounter increased wait times in the case of booming operations responding to sightings of oil within Pensecola Bay

At Bayou Sorrel Lock, continuing until further notice, a U.S. Government Contractor will work during daylight hours Monday through Friday from 0700 to 1700 for the construction of the northwest guide wall and dolphin installation. Bayou Sorrel Lock will operate from 1700 to 0700 Monday through Friday, and will be open to marine traffic 24 hours a day on weekends. However, some Saturday closures may occur. Delays are about 6 hours.

(GIWE) Conditions normal some weather delays.

IHNC Lock: As of this morning, there were 6 Eastbound lockings and 12 Westbound lockings on turn for 15 hour delay. Until further notice the US Coast Guard has mandated a removal of all bridge curfews on the Industrial Canal. Bridges will open to marine traffic on call during all hours. This has been necessitated by the need to get vessels through the locks to assist with the oil spill cleanup.

Algiers Lock: As of this morning, there were 0 Eastbound lockings and 2 Westbound lockings on turn for about a 2 hour delay.

Harvey Lock: As of this morning, there was 0 Eastbound locking and 0 Westbound lockings on turn for no delays.

(GIWW) WEST CANAL - Conditions are normal some weather delays.
